A single-effect evaporator refers to an evaporator where the secondary steam produced during the evaporation process is not reused. This type of evaporation operation is termed as single-effect evaporation. Single-effect evaporators are utilized when the production scale is small, steam is inexpensive, the materials are corrosive thus requiring very costly construction materials, or when the steam is contaminated and cannot be reused.Single-effect evaporators can operate in batch, semi-batch, continuous batch, or continuous modes. Strictly speaking, a batch evaporator operates with feed, evaporation, and discharge occurring in sequential steps. This mode of operation is rarely used as it necessitates a sufficiently large shell to accommodate the entire batch of feed and places the heating element low enough so that it remains submerged until the product volume is reduced. A more common mode of operation is semi-batch, where the feed is continuously added to maintain a constant liquid level until the entire batch reaches the desired density. Continuous batch evaporators typically have continuous feed and continuous discharge within at least part of the circulation range. One method of operation is to circulate from a storage tank to the evaporator and back until the entire tank reaches the required concentration, thus completing the process in batches. Continuous evaporators essentially involve continuous feed and discharge, with the concentrations of the feed and product remaining relatively constant.
